Who was Alfred?
• He was born in Wantage, Berkshire in 849, and died
in 899.

• He was the 5 son of Aethelwulf, king of the West
Saxons, and often sickly as a child.
• Alfred’s father sends him & one of his brothers on a
pilgrimage to Rome in 854.
• Young Alfred’s visit to Europe and his exposure to the
culture of the Carolingians has a profound influence
on him.
