The Legend About Alfred Burning the Cakes
• The legend arose at the time that Alfred was hiding in the
marshy lands of Athelney, in Somerset, having fled the
Vikings.
• It is said that Alfred sought shelter in the home of a poor
woman.
• One day she went out & tasked Alfred with minding the
cakes she was baking.
• Alfred agreed but became so engrossed with his own
thoughts that the cakes burnt!
• Is it true? Perhaps we will never know but maybe a seed of
truth & an insight into Alfred’s character & thoughts?
