Alfred’s Own Writings
• Alfred is likely the author of a code of law, which reflects his belief that
having a fair legal structure was so important that he would undertake that
task personally.
• He himself translated several important Latin texts into Anglo-Saxon
English. His choices were revealing.
• He also wrote about his own private trials, interpreting his illness (Krohn’s)
as a burden sent by God to test him & linking the savage attacks of his illness
to the relentless attacks of the enemy, the Vikings.
