Reason Two Why He Is “The Great”- He Saved Us
from the Viking Invasion
• To strengthen Anglo Saxon alliances & defend the kingdoms,
Alfred married one of his daughters, Aethelflaed, to the ruler of
Mercia.
• Alfred fought many battles even after the establishment of
Danelaw but one of his biggest legacies, is that he held back the
Viking invasion & established a period of strong stable rule.
• He also saw himself as defending Christianity itself.
• If it weren’t for him, we might now be speaking Danish &
worshipping Norse gods!
