Reason Seven – First Unbroken Line of Kings to
Rule the Whole of England.
• But after his death, Alfred’s son, Edward the
Elder, assisted by Alfred’s daughter Aethelfreda,
conquered eastern Danelaw.
• And after him, Alfred’s grandson Aethelstan
became the 1st king to rule the whole of
England when he conquered Northumbria in
927.
• He is now regarded by most historians as the
first true king of England.
• The title King of the English” (“Rex Anglorum”)
is first used to describe Aethelstan in one of his
charters in 928.
• The flag is that of the House of Wessex.
