Reason Seven – First Unbroken Line of Kings to
Rule the Whole of England.
• When Alfred came to the throne of Wessex,
there wasn’t really a concept of England.
• Wessex was one of seven Anglo-Saxon
kingdoms, collectively known as the
Heptarchy, which later formed modern
England. These are shown on the map.
• After a whole succession of military
conquests & allegiances, Alfred began styling
himself “King of the Angles and Saxons” in
886.
• However, he never ruled eastern & northern
England which fell under Danelaw.
