Parallels Between Alfred, Peter and Catherine.

• All three were heavily influenced by travelling to Western Europe & brought many ideas

they saw there back to their own countries. Alfred set up a small fleet to defend Wessex;
Peter disguised himself & worked in the shipyards of England & the Netherlands then

took the skills he had learned back to Russia & modernized the Russian fleet.

• All three modernized: implementing reforms & modernizing government & defence. They

all founded new cities like St Petersberg, Odessa, Kherson, Dnipro & Exeter, Shaftesbury &
Oxford. Alfred & Catherine reorganized the law code.

• They all fostered education, learning & the arts. Alfred set up a court school to educate

boys of noble birth & his daughters. Catherine founded the Smolny Institute for Noble

Maides, the 1 State financed Higher Education institution for women in Europe.

• All three had a vision & sense of mission.
