Aethelflaed, Lady of the Mercians

• The eldest daughter of Alfred the Great.

• She was born in 870, at the height of the Viking

invasions. By 878 England was under Viking rule.

• After his crucial victory over the Vikings at the

Battle of Edington, Alfred had sealed the strategic
alliance between the surviving Anglo Saxon

kingdoms by marrying Aethelflaed to Aethelred,
the Mercian king.

• Aethelred accepted Alfred’s overlordship, &

Alfred began titling himself King of the Anglo-

Saxons, claiming to rule all Anglo-Saxon people
not living under Danelaw.
