Reason Seven – First Unbroken Line of Kings to Rule
England.
• Hence, Alfred’s rule represents the start of the first
unbroken line of kings to rule the whole of England,
the House of Wessex.
• This continued up until the death of Aethelred the
Unready when the Danish Cnut & his sons ruled.
• The House of Wessex then briefly regained power
under Aethelred the Unready’s son Edward the
Confessor; but lost it after the Norman Conquest in
1066.
• However, all kings of England since Henry ll have
been descended from the House of Wessex through
Henry 1’s wife Matilda of Scotland, who was a great-
granddaughter of Edmund Ironside.
