Reason Six – Overcoming Health Challenges
• From Asser’s biography & Alfred’s own writings, we
know Alfred struggled for most of his life with really
excruciating pain, with no relief.
• With the benefit of science & improved knowledge, the
most likely cause was Krohn’s disease.
• At times Alfred wrestled with periods of pain so severe
that he could not even leave his room, interspersed
with fairly long periods of no pain.
• This would have been very difficult for anyone to deal
with, but particularly a king who must rule a country at
war & ride on horseback!
