are complementary.
• Many of the works translated or commissioned
from scratch by Alfred, like Asser’s biography of
Alfred & the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, connected
Alfred to a long tradition.
• As king, he had a mandate directly from God to
rule his kingdom, defend his peoples from foes &
to defend Christianity.
• So, his defence of Wessex was a just Christian
holy war.
