Reason Four – Improving Literacy and Learning
• He embarked on an equally ambitious effort to revive learning & improve
literacy.
• As he always did, he led by example. Although illiterate into his middle age,
he learned to read & write, learning Latin & himself translating many key
classical texts into Anglo Saxon.
• Alfred recruited learned clerical scholars from Mercia & wider across
Europe to enhance his court.
