But let’s give William Morris the last word. In an early poem, The Earthly Paradise
(1868), he wrote:
“Forget six counties overhung with smoke,
Forget the snorting steam and piston stroke,
Forget the spreading of the hideous town,
Think rather of the pack-horse on the down,
And dream of London, small and clean,
The clear Thames bordered by its garden green.”
Not quite the last word. History is full of unexpected connections. The National Trust
website reveals one of these. When Octavia Hill acquired her very first houses, in
Paradise Place, London, who bought them for her?
