In conclusion, Metternich and Mazzini well illustrate the two sides of the
conversation: Metternich the cosmopolitan, Enlightenment rationalist, turned fierce
conservative by the French Revolution; and Mazzini, the Romantic hero, fanning the
flames of nationalist emotion and idealism. But neither achieved their aims. How
would the conversation be resolved? We need to look at this in future sessions.
