            Was it mass political murder? Or drunkenness? Or just a tragic accident?

            Or perhaps the real question is a geopolitical one: given the primitive state of
            medieval seafaring, how sustainable was it to try to govern a single kingdom divided
            by the English Channel?

            However, this was not necessarily how people looked at it as the time. We can find
            clues about this from an early map, the Mappa Mundi (official name
            The Hereford Mappa Mundi c.1285):
































            Mappa Mundi means map of the world. Over a thousand medieval ones survive,
            some free-standing, some as illustrations on manuscripts. This one is displayed in

            Hereford Cathedral. Below, it is shown with modern countries superimposed.
