The third theme, revolutions, focuses on Britain and includes the health and welfare
revolution of the welfare state, changes in Britain’s place in the world, the sixties and
the rise of modern feminism. I propose to end with a look at remembrance, its part in
British national identity, and a revisionist historian who considers that technology
was less revolutionary than we think.
But we begin with an area that definitely was: culture.
